AMA Races at V.I.R: Anticipation

We're in the final rundown to the AMA Superbike Series Suzuki Big Kahuna Nationals at Virginia International Raceway round. The fun starts this coming Friday, August 15th. The food (and beer) have been purchased, the toy hauler has been cleaned and mostly prepped, schedules have been finalized, and now we're just waiting for Thursday when I'll hook the toy hauler to the truck and haul it up to Virginia to set up camp. We'll be camping trackside from Thursday evening straight through until Sunday evening when the on-track action concludes. As of right now www.weather.com is predicting great weather for the weekend so it should be a great time.

There is a bit of a worry concerning the event this year though. Though the AMA Superbike series has many detractors, and in fact I'm occasionally one of them, the VIR round has been one of the high points of my year since I first attended in 2004. The event has gotten better every year and it's become a big affair for several members of my immediate family as well as for me and my motorcycling friends. Unfortunately, the miasma of doubt and rumors about the future of the series since it's purchase by the Daytona Motorsports Group has cast doubt on whether or not the event will happen next year and if it does will I be forced to boycott as I certainly will if the DMG follows through with much of it's early proposals.

I had hoped that the DMG announcement concerning it's official rules would calm things down with the manufacturers and riders. Apparently that either wasn't the case. There are still stories, posts, blogs, podcasts, and whatever else saying that the manufacturers aren't where they want to be yet. I for one am hoping that they are all able to come to some sort of agreement and that we can have a solid, strong series from next year on. I would unutterably depressed to have my annual pilgrimage to VIR halted because the DMG takeover.
